Employees at Georgia-Pacific’s Palatka mill joined forces this holiday season to provide new clothes, shoes and toys for children in need across Putnam County. The effort supported the Putnam County School District’s annual Angel Tree program, which fulfills holiday wishes for children who might otherwise go without gifts at Christmas. Georgia-Pacific employees purchased, wrapped and delivered 696 gifts for 58 students at Browning Pearce Elementary, James A. Long Elementary, Kelley Smith Elementary, Melrose Elementary, Middleton-Burney Elementary, William D. Moseley Elementary, Ochwilla Elementary, Robert H. Jenkins Jr. Elementary and Mellon Learning Center. “Every child deserves to experience the joy of Christmas morning,” said Chris Gent, manager of public affairs at the mill. “We are honored to partner with the school district to help ease the financial burden of the holidays for local families in need.” Georgia-Pacific has a long history of supporting education and community programs in Putnam County. The Palatka mill, which produces paper products used nationwide, regularly partners with local schools and nonprofits to strengthen families and improve quality of life in the region. This high school tutoring initiative pairs trained juniors and seniors with K–3 students to support early literacy in elementary schools. Thanks to the incredible generosity of our community, 120 pairs of Angel Tree shoes have just been delivered to support PCSD students across Putnam County!

For the second year in a row, Shoe Show manager Margaret Chamberlin partnered with PCSD Student Services by hosting an Angel Tree in the store—giving customers the opportunity to purchase shoes or donate toward footwear for local students. With the help of Shoe Show’s loyal customers, local churches, businesses, and community members (plus a little help from Facebook!), the response was overwhelming.

We are so grateful to everyone who stepped up to ensure our students have what they need. This is what community support looks like—and our kids felt the love. 💙💚

Palatka Jr.-Sr. High School's 8th grade science students had an out-of-this-world experience during an in-school visit to the planetarium! Through interactive presentations and a full dome projection of the night sky, students were able to explore the wonders of space and see their classroom learning come to life. This experience connected classroom lessons to real-world science.

A huge thank-you to PCSD’s Teaching and Learning Department for making this opportunity possible!
