Robotics

Robert H. Jenkins Jr. Elementary recently hosted its first-ever VEX IQ Robotics competition, and the inaugural event was an outstanding success thanks to the leadership of Chris Gallagher, 6th Grade STEM teacher and Robotics Coach.

Organizing a VEX-style competition is no small task—especially for the first time—but Mr. Gallagher rose to the challenge, coordinating a well-run, high-energy event that welcomed 19 teams from across North and Central Florida, including participants from Palmetto, Kissimmee, Newberry, and Gainesville. The competition marked a major milestone for Robert H. Jenkins Jr. Elementary and the district, as it was the school’s first year competing in VEX Robotics and its first time hosting a tournament of this scale.

The RAMpage Robotics teams represented the school and district with pride:

  • Team 32148A placed 16th

  • Team 32148B advanced to the finals and earned an impressive 4th place finish

The event, named the RAMpage Robotics Rumble Rally, showcased not only student skill and innovation but also teamwork, problem-solving, and sportsmanship.

Mr. Gallagher expressed his appreciation for the many individuals who helped make the day a success:

“I would like to thank all of the volunteers that helped to make the inaugural RAMpage Robotics Rumble Rally a success! This is our first year competing in VEX Robotics, the first competition our team competed in, and the first time hosting a VEX-style competition.”

He also shared his vision for the program's future, noting plans to recruit new team members, learn the upcoming VEX game this spring, and compete in additional tournaments throughout North Central Florida.

The event would not have been possible without the dedication of an incredible group of volunteers from across the district, including staff members, community members, and students:

Katrina Hall, a Robert H. Jenkins Jr. Elementary employee volunteer, shared:

“JES held its first VEX Robotics tournament today and it was a hit! I was overwhelmed with all the ‘new-to-me’ stuff, but the kids, coaches, and parents all knew exactly how it was supposed to go. Kudos to RAMpage Robotics for putting on a fantastic, well-organized tournament!”

Parents echoed those sentiments, highlighting the educational value and excitement of the event.

“It seemed to be a great learning experience for the kids as well as the adults,” said Brittany McClenney. “I enjoyed watching how teams worked together to problem solve and strategize. Very enjoyable to watch as a parent.”

Paula Harris added:

“We had a great time. It was a spectacular event. Congratulations to the RAMpage Robotics team that made it all the way to 4th place! Both teams did great. You really did a great job with the kids and this event.”

The success of the RAMpage Robotics Rumble Rally reflects the dedication of Mr. Gallagher, the hard work of the students, and the strong support of the Robert H. Jenkins Jr. Elementary and Putnam County School District community. This inaugural competition has set the stage for an exciting future for robotics at Robert H. Jenkins Jr. Elementary.
