new teacher institute

This July, the PCSD Mentor Team hosted the 2025 Summer New Teacher Institute—a phenomenal three-day experience designed to prepare and inspire our newest educators, whether they are brand new to the profession or joining our district from elsewhere.

Day One kicked off with a warm welcome from Superintendent Rick Surrency and Assistant Superintendent of Curriculum & Instruction, Laura France, followed by an energizing keynote address from Daryl Williams, Jr. Teachers also participated in an important session on professional ethics presented by Assistant Superintendent of Business Operations, Tonya Whitehurst. The afternoon featured engaging sessions on teacher well-being with Mental Health Counselor, Sandy Hurst, and understanding the student brain with guidance teacher, Brittani Phillips from IJSHS.

Day Two was led by the PCSD Mentor Team, focusing on classroom culture, classroom management, and planning for the first day of school—equipping new teachers with practical strategies to set the tone for success.

Day Three was about building connections. Teachers learned about the district evaluation tool, Marzano, from Tonya Whitehurst, heard from PFT/U Union President, Mark Motl, and were inspired by our 2025 PCSD Teacher of the Year, Arielle Driggers. The day concluded with a meet-and-greet where representatives from HR, IT, Teaching & Learning, CTE, and Student Services shared resources. Principals and assistant principals from schools across the district were also on hand to personally connect with their new team members.

Throughout the institute, our new teachers enjoyed classroom goodies, delicious meals, and plenty of encouragement. We extend a special thank you to our generous sponsors, whose annual contributions make this event possible.
