PCSD Students Celebrate Black History Month

PCSD Students Celebrate Black History Month

February 24, 2023

Throughout the month of February, PCSD alongside the nation, have celebrated Black History Month. Black History Month was created to focus attention on the legacies of all African Americans in the United States.

On Friday, February 24th,  students, adults, and community leaders from across PCSD gathered together at the  C.L. Overturf, Jr. District Center to honor the rich heritage of  Black History in Putnam County. This year's event focused on African American achievements and contributions in  STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics).

The event featured performances by students from Putnam Academy of Arts and Sciences and students from Heart & Soul Youth Fine Arts.

Audiences were also able to hear personal stories  from guest speaker Attorney Terrill Hill, Former City of Palatka Mayor who encouraged students not to let their circumstance define their situation.

Yul McNair, Airport Manager, Palatka Municipal Airport planted seeds in the minds of students with the objective to step out of their comfort zone and do great things. He advised, “Your attitude, whether good or bad, is a major determining factor in your altitude" and encouraged students to "Make the decision to be successful.”

There was an opportunity for students in the audience to ask questions of both guest speakers. The most thought provoking question came from CCJSHS via Livestream asking both candidates for one encouraging word to leave students with today. Terrill Hill responded first, “Hope and the ability to dream. With hope we can do all things.” Yul McNair followed, stating, "Faith. On this journey you will have highs and lows but with faith you can get through it.”

Schools showcased history displays created by students in the Jim Pignato Theatre foyer.

Following the event, the PCSD Food Service team served a delicious rib dinner to all attendees in the gymnasium.

Special 'Thank You' to: Students and staff from the 21st Century Community Learning Centers after-school programs for foyer displays, Nikki Hawthorne & the PCSD Food Service Team, Cornethia Forman & Marion Session with The Forman Way Photography & Events, Sunshine Nealy with SignGypsies Putnam County, and the PCSD Black History Month planning committee.
