What You Need to Know about RtI

A Multi-Tiered System of Supports is a framework or evidence-based model of schooling that uses data-based problem solving to integrate   academic and behavioral instruction and intervention. The integrated instruction and intervention is delivered to students in varying intensities (or tiers) based on student needs. The collaborative problem solving method within an MTSS framework includes four steps:

  • What is the problem?

  • Why is the problem occurring?

  • What are we going to do about it?

  • Is our plan working?

Step four in the problem solving method is arguably the most important step as it specifically looks to determine whether a student has responded positively, or not, to the intervention and supports provided. It is from this crucial step that the Response to Intervention process gets its name.
