The Jessica Lunsford Act
The Jessica Lunsford Act was passed by the 2005 Florida Legislature
and signed into law by Governor Bush following the assault and murder
of Jessica Lunsford in Homosassa Springs, Florida. The crime was allegedly
committed by an individual who had at one time worked as a subcontracted
mason at Jessica Lunsford's school . The act is designed to focus primarily
on increasing the measures used to monitor sexual offenders or predators.
However, part of the act is specifically related to individuals with
access to school district campuses.
Therefore, to meet the letter of the law and to provide a safe campus
for our students, all contracted workers on school campuses are given
a Level II fingerprint background check and must be cleared to work
on school campuses. The law further states that parents, volunteers, school
visitors, etc., must be screened before being permitted on campus. This
is a quick procedure that is done when you check in at the front office.
A drivers license or picture ID is required. We hope this change in the
law will not keep you from visiting your child's school or keep you from
volunteering in our schools.
School personnel will stop and question anyone on campus that has not
been properly cleared through the office. Please help us keep schools
safe by checking in through the front office.
