Building Information Literacy with APPLE :
A research model for developing informed decision makers and independent lifetime learners.

The APPLE Research Model, developed by the School District of Clay County in Florida, is a simple way to give your students the tools they need for solving problems. Thanks to Alisa Jones and Angie Sapp, from Clay County's Instructional Media Services for sharing their model and training materials. web page by Marsha Cruce, Putnam County School District.

A - ask

P - plan

P - pull it together

L - let's use the information

E - evaluate

There are many research models available. The simplicity of APPLE makes it easy to teach and share .Compare APPLE to other Research Models ( pdf file)

The APPLE Research Model

Ask - What am I supposed to do? What is the problem that I need to state? What are the questions I should answer? What type of information do I need? How much information do I need? Should I narrow my topic? What will my finished project look like? Where will I look for background information?

Plan - What are my possible sources? Will I use books, the internet, magazines, interviews, videos? Which sources will work best for me?Who can help me find the materials that I need? When I decide what I need how and where will I locate information? How will I apply skimming, scanning, and keywords to look for information? How will I decide which information to use? How will I record the information that I find? How will I give credit to my sources. What materials will I need before I begin. ( Paper, note cards, high lighters, tape recorder)
Pull It Together - (process the information) find the information in the sources, extract the best information, interpret it. Use organization tools like note cards outlines, diagrams, charts, data sheets, graphic organizers, lists and timelines to record relevant information. Draw conclusions.

Let's Use the information -How will I present the results of my research? A written report? Debate? Presentation? Drama? Music? A Model? A Visual Presentation? Create your product.

Evaluate- Have I completed the requirements of my assignment? Is my product logically organized and carefully proofread? How could I have made the project better? What will I do differently next time? Did I answer all the important questions? How efficient was my research? How effective was my product? Did I give proper credit to my sources? Is my work neat? Is my work complete? Is my name on my paper?
